Board Certified Anesthesiologist and Pain Management Doctor

Born and raised in the Detroit metro area, Dr. Derrick Wansom attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and graduated with Honors in Biology. He then received a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship and spent a year studying music and culture across East Asia. Dr. Wansom earned his medical degree and completed an internship in general surgery at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. He then completed anesthesia residency and an interventional pain management fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Upon finishing his fellowship, Dr. Wansom moved to Austin, TX and practiced in Austin and Bastrop, TX for 6 years. Dr. Wansom is board certified in both Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology and practices comprehensive pain medicine. He recently was selected by his peers and awarded Top Doctor by Austin Monthly in 2022.

Chronic pain can be difficult to live with, as it affects mood, emotions, relationships and quality of life. Dr. Wansom appreciates the importance of listening to patients, understanding their individual needs, and recognizing their challenges when dealing with chronic pain. He feels that the most gratifying aspect of pain management is facilitating functional restoration so patients can return to an active, fulfilling lifestyle.

In his free time, Dr. Wansom enjoys photography, wrenching on vintage cars, and listening to a diverse spectrum of music.
